Q: Western Maryland Scenic Railroad just announced their new George’s Creek line! What inspired WMSR to add this line?
A: The Georges Creek Division was an opportunity to expand, open up new markets, and explore freight and passenger opportunities to help grow our operation.
Q: When do you expect the George’s Creek line to be up and running? Will it start in Frostburg and end in Westernport?
A: Our aim for the Georges Creek Division is to have passenger trains running by the end of 2024. We have been working for a month now and have made significant progress since we started. This line used to connect to our current line in Frostburg, but it doesn’t anymore. The line’s starting point is approximately 3.5 miles south of Frostburg in Borden Shaft, MD, and it ends in Westernport, MD.
Q: What do you have in store for this new line and area?
A: We are excited to bring our award-winning passenger services to the Georges Creek Valley. We look forward to introducing new experiences and offering current trips to the region. We aim to collaborate with the local communities and businesses to create a memorable experience for our visitors. We are excited to breathe life into Georges Creek and contribute to the growth of the region.
Q: As excited as we are for the new line, we love your original Cumberland to Frostburg line. Do you have any changes or plans in store for 2024?
A: We are in the process of finalizing our schedule for 2024. As part of the new schedule, we will be announcing a new brewery train in the upcoming months. Our focus for the 2024 season is to enhance the passenger experience by upgrading and updating our equipment. This will include improvements to comfort, views, and other amenities.
Q: People ask us about the steam engine all the time! Will 1309 be up and running this year? Will the George’s Creek line feature the steam engine?
A: The 1309 will be operating in 2024, but we do not have a set date for a return to steam as parts are on order. We will have her up and running as soon as possible. Steam on the Georges Creek Division is not in the plans, but never say never.
Q: The Scenic Railroad has seen some very positive changes and success in recent years. What do you attribute that to?
A: I believe that our success can be attributed to the team we have assembled in 2021. We are a group of highly motivated individuals who are committed to providing the best possible experiences for our passengers. With the support of Allegany County and the Georges Creek Valley, we are capable of achieving anything.
